Everyone Welcome

I have always believed that good dental hygiene treatment and education should be accessible to everyone. Not only does good dental hygiene make your teeth look and feel better but also has huge benefits to your general health.

We were delighted therefore when on the 1st May the General Dental Council changed the “rules “ which now allows the general public direct access to a dental hygienist, without needing a referral from their dentist.

This means we are now accessible to everyone!!!

Yipeeeee!!

So come along, meet us, book an appointment and experience a breath of fresh air!!

everyone welcome at total hygiene

How gum disease can affect your general health

Most people are aware that the human mouth is full of (mostly) harmless bacteria, when kept under control with proper dental hygiene. Studies also suggest that oral bacteria and the inflammation associated with periodontitis - a severe form of gum disease - might play a role in some cardiac diseases.

Researchers at the American Dental Association have found that periodontitis (the advanced form of periodontal disease that can cause tooth loss) is linked with health problems, such as cardiovascular disease.

Bacteria in the mouth may cause inflammation throughout the body, including the arteries, where it can lead to a heart attack or stroke. Gingivitis (oral inflammation due to bacteria) may also play a role in the increased formation of blood clots, possibly increasing your risk of a heart attack or stroke.

Since March 2013 the General Dental Council relaxed the regulations allowing dental hygienists to provide dental hygiene services without being examined by a dentist.

 Cardiac

Certain bacteria found in an inflamed mouth have been found in arterial plaque and have been known to alter clotting in the blood stream.

 Diabetes

Gum disease has an adverse effect on controlling blood sugar levels and studies show periodontal disease increases the risk for Diabetes complications.

 Pregnancy, Health of the Foetus

Gum disease present in the expecting mother can lead to low birth weights and premature birth.

 Alzheimer’s, Cognitive Memory

Alzheimer’s patients have a significantly higher amount of antibodies and inflammatory molecules associated with periodontal disease in their blood stream.

Overall Inflammation

Studies indicate that gum disease may add to overall inflammation in the body by raising C-reactive protein index.
